Contempt of Court/reporting restrictions
We frequently advise the press on threats of contempt proceedings. We also represent the collective interests of media organisations, whether it's to secure the right of the media to report on public matters or to challenge reporting restrictions imposed by the court.
We are experts in the new rules in reporting in family courts and have challenged reporting restrictions made in this context.
- "RPC has ‘a great understanding of the needs of newspapers, having represented almost all of the nationals at some point’. The group had ‘an amazing year for defendant work’, and ‘seems stronger than ever, having always been excellent’"- The Legal 500, 2012 edition
Examples of relevant work
- Challenging reporting restrictions forbidding the press from revealing details in the family courts
- Defending a newspaper which had received a complaint for breaching reporting restrictions relating to reports on sexual offences
- Acting for a newspaper which successfully defended a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) for numerous breaches of the PCC Code
