Container weight fraud

14 November 2014

Container weights is a hot topic at the moment, with the IMO set to introduce new requirements for the verification of container gross mass.

It is generally held that container weights are under-declared, however the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has recently reported on an unusual case where the tare weight of the container was falsified, making the container appear heavier than it actually is. As a result, the weight of cargo of scrap aluminium recorded on the bill of lading was less than the true weight.  Although this is the first such case reported to the IMB, the Bureau believes that this is unlikely to be an isolated incident.
