Sarah Mountain

Sarah is a Partner in the IP and Technology team and specialises in contentious and advisory matters. Sarah acts for a broad range of clients, often in the tech, media and retail sectors, on everything from strategic litigation to day to day brand protection matters.

Sarah's particular focus is on trade marks, copyright, passing off, designs and confidential information but she routinely supports clients on technology and commercial matters too. She has a wealth of litigation experience, having acted on large scale disputes with both a UK and international focus.

In recent years, Sarah has been doing lots of work in the cryptocurrency space, including acting on an extremely high profile passing off case brought in relation to the listing of Bitcoin. In 2023, this saw her ranked in Chambers and Partners' Fintech Guide 2024, for Crypto-Asset Disputes.

Sarah regularly authors articles on IP and has been published in the Entertainment Law Review, the Distillers and Brewers Journals, The Food, Beverage and Cosmetics Law Review, Luxury Law, as well as on Lexis Nexis. In 2023, she (alongside various others at RPC) co-authored the 3rd edition of leading designs text, 'Design Law and Practice'.  Sarah also regularly speaks on IP issues at external events including lecturing at the Informa Connect IP Summer Law School at Cambridge University, where she delivers an annual session on 'Trade Marks in the Digital Age'.

Sarah is recognised by IP Stars and is recommended for Retail and Consumer and Intellectual Property: Trade Marks, Copyright and Design by The Legal 500 UK (2023). Sarah is also ranked in the Chambers and Partners Fintech Guide 2024, for Crypto-Asset Disputes.

  • Acting for leading cryptocurrency exchange in passing off proceedings relating to Bitcoin.
  • Advised a major social media platform in relation to the use of website blocking orders as a means of preventing dissemination of infringing content.
  • Acting for a leading cryptocurrency issuer in trade mark infringement and passing off proceedings in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.
  • Assisted a leading broadcaster with a global copyright clearance project in relation to broadcasting from virtual worlds. Other key jurisdictions included Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa and the United States.
